GOP Budget Plan: Another Massive Tax Giveaway to the Wealthy

Another State Budget Under Gov. Walker and GOP Legislature, Another Massive Giveaway to the Wealthiest Wisconsinites'

MADISON, Wis. — One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross released the following statements regarding Rep. Dale Kooyenga’s announcement of a new GOP tax scheme doling out over $400 million in new tax breaks that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest in the state:

“Another state budget under Gov. Walker and the GOP controlled legislature, another massive giveaway to the wealthiest Wisconsinites at the expense of our schools and our children.

“In the last budget, Gov. Walker and the GOP legislature enacted the largest cuts to public education in state history. Cuts that in large part produced the current state surplus.

“But instead of returning the money they took from our schools, Republicans are proposing hundreds of millions in new tax breaks that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest in the state.

“It’s bad enough that Republicans are willing to mortgage our future to reward their wealthy patrons and fuel Gov. Walker’s national political ambitions. But what makes it even worse is that our own experience in Wisconsin shows their trickle-down economics and tax giveaways don’t work.

“If Republicans were serious in their rhetoric about helping Wisconsin families, they’d stop attacking our public schools to give tax breaks to the rich and start supporting our public schools and targeting property tax savings to the middle class.”
