John Macco’s Vision: Less Math & Science In Our Schools?

Senate Candidate Calls for Elimination of 'Mandated Classes'

MADISON, Wis. — John Macco recently invited the public to share a “fresh vision for Northeast Wisconsin”. But according to One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross, Macco’s “vision” could mean children are less prepared for careers and get less instruction in critical subjects like math and science.

Ross commented, “It’s hard to imagine parents or employers want to demand less accountability from our schools or fail to help children have the academic basis to succeed in the 21st century. But that’s what John Macco seems to be proposing.”

In a document available on Macco’s website, he calls for the elimination of “mandated classes from Madison”. State statues outline numerous requirements for schools including:

  • High school graduation standards;
  • Criteria for promotion from 4th and 8th grade;
  • Minimum days and hours of instruction;
  • School curriculum must include instruction in subjects like reading, math and science;
  • Pupil assessment testing; and
  • Providing education for employment programs.

Ross concluded, “Asking less of our schools, teachers and children may be John Macco’s misguided vision for the future, but it fails the test of helping to create a successful future for our children.”
