Rep. Vos Claims No Documents Related to Legal Work, Court Filings on his Behalf in Response to One Wisconsin Now Open Records Request

MADISON, Wis. — In response to One Wisconsin Now’s open records request for documents related to his controversial, and potentially illegal, participation in a lawsuit on state voter identification legislation, Rep. Robin Vos today claimed that neither he nor his staff possess a single letter, email, note or other document related to the case.

One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross commented, “Rep. Vos asks us to believe that the legal work he received, including the filing of formal court documents in his capacity as a State Representative, coordinated with and funded by the Republican National Committee, didn’t generate a single e-mail, letter or note to him or his staff.”

One Wisconsin Now filed a formal state ethics complaint alleging Rep. Vos violated state ethic laws by accepting free legal counsel related to his effort to join a lawsuit over the state’s Jim Crow-era voter identification legislation. Rep. Vos subsequently dropped out of the lawsuit. Further investigation revealed the Republican National Committee paid for Vos’ lawyers.

Ross commented, “Either Rep. Vos was shockingly willing to allow himself to be used, no questions asked, by third parties in this case, or he took deliberate steps to not generate or receive any records of his involvement in potentially illegal activity.”

He concluded, “Neither choice engenders much faith in Rep. Vos’ leadership or his commitment to serving the public interest.”

One Wisconsin Now’s open records request and the response from Rep. Vos’ state office can be viewed here.
