#WalkerAt20: Failure Foreshadowed, The Walker Administration in Milwaukee County

Remembering 20 Years of Walker Failure

MADISON, Wis. — In his twenty years in office, Scott Walker has amassed a truly astounding record of failure. To commemorate the looming anniversary of his first election to office, One Wisconsin Now is highlighting a different and depressing failure of Gov. Walker every day, for twenty days. The failures of today are, sadly, not new. In Walker’s time as Milwaukee County Executive, local economic development efforts were bungled and services for the most vulnerable were mismanaged and neglected.

“The mismanagement and failure at his scandal plagued Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and his attempts to cut state help for seniors and persons with disabilities were all previewed in Scott Walker’s tenure as Milwaukee County Executive,” noted Scot Ross, One Wisconsin Now Executive Director. “Scott Walker apparently doesn’t learn from his failures, he repeats them.”

Among Gov. Walker’s local failures previewing his mismanagement of the state are:

  • Cutting funding by almost 50 percent to the Office of Community Business Development Partners over several years eventually leading to the County Board taking control of the division in 2006. In his 2007 budget, Walker stripped millions of dollars from the Department of Administrative Service’s Economic and Community Development Division, and then completely eliminated the division in 2009. • As Milwaukee County Executive, Scott Walker was entrusted with oversight of the mental health system responsible caring for some of the most vulnerable in our society. But under his administration, the system was repeatedly cited for mismanagement and critical safety lapses. [http://www.scottwalkerfailurefiles.com]
  • Mismanagement and a refusal to provide adequate staffing levels led to 95% of calls to the county public assistance office going unanswered. Walker’s inability, or refusal, to fix the problems drove state government step and take over the system to ensure that the citizens of Milwaukee County received the services they needed and for which they were eligible. One Wisconsin Now is commemorating over 20 days, the failings, scandals and imbroglios of Gov. Scott Walker’s 20-years in elected office. Gov. Walker, who was first elected to the State Assembly on June 29, 1993, has spent virtually no time in the private sector and has enjoyed nearly half his life on the taxpayers’ dime, including receiving well over $1 million in salary alone, as well as health care benefits for he and his family.
