Follow the Money: Gov. Walker Endorses Ted Cruz in Republican Presidential Race

MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Scott Walker, himself a 2016 Republican presidential candidate for 71 days, endorsed U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz today. In announcing his pick, Walker failed to mention the most obvious reason for his support, according to One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross — Cruz is the only candidate still in the race who actively solicited money to help retire his massive campaign debt.

“With Scott Walker you always follow the money,” commented Ross. “He’s pulled his punches when it comes to his $10,000 donor Donald Trump and now he’s thrown his support behind the only candidate left in the race who has helped him try to pay off the huge campaign debt from his 71 day presidential run.”

According to media reports, Cruz sent a message to his supporters encouraging them to donate to his “friend” Scott Walker’s campaign. According to his campaign finance reports, Walker’s wild spending on his disastrous run for the Republican presidential nomination has saddled him with over $1 million in campaign debts.

Walker, whose Wisconsin job approval rating has consistently remained below 40 percent, had previously declared that the GOP nominee ought to be a governor and U.S. Senators like Ted Cruz should be disqualified in the race because they would be too tied to Washington D.C.

Ross concluded, “It might appear Gov. Walker’s endorsement of Ted Cruz is inconsistent based on his previous statements. But it’s based on Scott Walker’s guiding principle — what’s most advantageous for his next election and his own political future.”
