Did Michael Screnock Promise the NRA He Supports More Guns in Schools?
NRA-Endorsed Candidate Has Not Revealed If Guns in Schools Among Promises He Made to Earn Gun Lobby’s Support
MADISON, Wis. — State Supreme Court candidate Michael Screnock has still not disclosed what he wrote to the National Rifle Association (NRA) in a letter the gun lobby required to earn their endorsement. One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross renewed the call for Screnock to publicly release the letter and to reveal whether or not he supports putting guns in schools, as the NRA has called for in recent days.
“The people of Wisconsin deserve to know what Michael Screnock promised the NRA, and if he’s looking out for the gun lobby or our safety,” said Ross. “That includes answering whether or not he supports the NRA agenda of putting guns in schools.”
According to the NRA, to win their endorsement, as Screnock has done, candidates are required to send a letter to the gun lobby detailing their “positions on Second Amendment issues.” After submitting his letter, the NRA mailed a postcard declaring Screnock had “vowed to protect” firearms and “committed” to their agenda.
In recent public appearances, top NRA officials have called for putting guns in schools in response to calls to protect children from gun violence in schools. A number of Screnock’s fellow Wisconsin Republicans have endorsed the gun lobby’s approach.
Ross concluded, “The answer to guns in schools is not putting guns in schools. And having gun lobby lackeys on our state high court is not how we make our communities safer.”
