Court Rules Gov. Scott Walker Must Call Elections to Fill To State Legislative Vacancies
Decision Sends Message to Gov. Scott Walker, Attorney General Brad Schimel: In a Democracy We Have Elections and Voters Get to Vote
MADISON, Wis. — A Dane County judge, appointed by Gov. Scott Walker, today ruled that Walker cannot refuse to call special elections to fill vacancies in the 1st State Senate and 42nd Assembly Districts.
The seats were vacated in December 2017 when Walker himself appointed the holders of the seats to positions in his administration.
The following are the statements of One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross:
“This ruling delivers the message loud and clear to Gov. Walker, Attorney General Brad Schimel and Republican legislators that in a democracy we have elections and that voters get to vote.
“There is nothing in state statute that gives Walker and his gang the authority to cancel elections because they are afraid of losing.
“Just like in our successful federal lawsuit that restored real early voting, a judge has ruled against Scott Walker’s partisan schemes to rig elections for his own political gain.”
