‘Beyond Understanding’: One Wisconsin Now Calls On U.S. Senator Johnson to Drop Threat to Filibuster Common Sense Gun Sale Regulation
MADISON, Wis. — With word that a bipartisan agreement has been reached on legislation to conduct background checks for private gun sales in commercial settings, One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross wrote Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson, taking him to task for his threats to filibuster common sense gun regulations.
In the letter Ross wrote, “With all due respect, it is beyond understanding where in the United States Constitution you find a right to sell dangerous firearms to criminals that is worthy of protection.”
Since 2004 in Wisconsin, 34 individuals have lost their lives in mass gun violence incidents, including recent events in a temple in Oak Creek and a day spa in Brookfield.
In addition to holding an increasingly extreme position against stopping gun violence among his Senate colleagues, a recent statewide poll found 81% of those surveyed, including 75% of Republicans, favored, “making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks.”
“The only thing more outrageous than Sen. Johnson’s declaration he’ll filibuster common sense background checks for gun sales is his ridiculous attempt to say the Constitution protects the right to sell dangerous firearms to criminals,” concluded Ross.
