One Wisconsin Now Statements of Continued Solidarity with Occupy Wisconsin Uprising
Wisconsin Ground Zero As Walker Gives More Power, Money to Corporation, Big Banks, While Reducing Rights of Workers, Middle Class
MADISON, Wis. — One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross released the following statements of continuing solidarity with the “Occupy Wall Street” efforts and today’s events in cities around Wisconsin. One Wisconsin Now will be on hand at today’s Occupy Milwaukee event carrying its banner about the $1 trillion in student loan debt, which threatens the economic future of the country.
“The outrage has spread across the nation over politicians like Gov. Scott Walker, who enrich corporate special interests with our tax dollars while gutting public education, health care and leaving students with never-before-seen levels of debt to get a higher education
“Gov. Walker and the Republican legislature handed out $2.3 billion in new tax breaks to corporations and the rich, and he has failed Wisconsin. Our unemployment rate has risen from 7.4 percent to 7.9 percent and we have 14,000 fewer jobs. Rather than do anything to relieve the soul-crushing $1 trillion in student loan debt, which is stealing the futures of post-Baby Boomers across this state and the nation, Gov. Walker has only made it worse for Wisconsin students.
“We reiterate our words from the earliest days of this uprising. On behalf of our 52,000 online supporters, One Wisconsin Now stands in continuing solidarity with the efforts to wrench our government back from the corruption of Wall Street and Corporate America. Ending Wall Street and Corporate America’s dominance of our public policy is the economic civil rights struggle of the next decade. To paraphrase slain civil rights leader Malcolm X, ‘We didn’t occupy Wall Street, Wall Street occupied us.’”
