MADISON, Wis. — A recently unearthed “white paper” strategy document from anti-abortion activists reveals Brad Schimel endorses their agenda to criminalize abortion, even in cases of rape or incest and potentially jail doctors for providing abortions. According to the plan, Schimel endorses the enforcement of the 1955 criminal abortion statute.

One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross commented, “Brad Schimel has endorsed a legal strategy to again turn back the clock in Wisconsin. This time he would re-victimize women who became pregnant by rape or incest and threaten doctors with jail time for providing abortions.”

A 2012 “white paper” from the anti-abortion activist group Wisconsin Right to Life endorses a strategy of “preserving” the 1955 state statute that would ban abortions even in cases of rape or incest and impose felony charges against doctors who perform abortions in almost every circumstance.

Brad Schimel is listed in his official capacity as Waukesha County District Attorney in the document as among the, “attorneys who agree with the content and conclusions of the legal white paper.”

Previously Schimel declared he would defend other laws severely restricting a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her healthcare including mandating she undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion. Schimel even said he would have defended a state law outlawing interracial marriage if it were on the books.

Ross said, “Brad Schimel has declared he will defend extreme government intrusions mandating women undergo specific medical procedures. And he’s endorsed a legal strategy to turn back the clock to 1955 when it comes to reproductive health care laws in Wisconsin — banning abortion even in cases of rape or incest and threatening doctors with jail time.”

He concluded, “When it comes to reproductive health care Brad Schimel just doesn’t believe the time has come for women to be able to make their own decisions.”
