Walker’s Past Statements on the Need for Recall
Walker Has Broken Promises, Taken Away Rights, Torn Wisconsin Apart During 11-Month Reign
MADISON, Wis. — With Gov. Scott Walker in the midst of an extended period of fundraising unlimited amounts of campaign cash, One Wisconsin Now is reminded of this video produced by Walker’s 2010 campaign about recalls. A Walker donor filed papers on November 4 for a fake recall of Walker, allowing the governor 11 additional days to raise unlimited campaign cash, using a loophole in the state’s campaign finance laws.
Walker also says in the video, “The guy who had the job before me tried to grab millions of dollars for himself and his friends.” This is a curious statement considering Walker broke a 2006 campaign pledge to not raise money during the state budget process and nabbed $2.1 million from 24,000 donors during the six-month budget deliberations in 2011.
“Gov. Walker has torn Wisconsin apart to attack working families and enrich corporations and the wealthy with $2.3 billion in our tax dollars,” said Scot Ross, One Wisconsin Now Executive Director. “As the son of a minister, Gov. Walker should well know ‘for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.’”
From the Walker 2010 video:
You know the folks that were angry about this started a recall and they were told they needed to collect 73,000 signatures in sixty days. Well not hundreds, not thousands but tens of thousands of ordinary people did an extraordinary thing. They stood up and took their government back. In less than 30 days they collected more than 150,000 signatures. It was at that moment I realized the real emotion on display in my county wasn’t just about anger. You see if it had been about anger it would have been about people checking out and moving out or giving up. But instead what happened was really amazing. You saw people standing up shoulder to shoulder, neighbor to neighbor and saying we want our government back. And in doing so the real emotion on display was about hope. Today I see a lot of the same emotions on display here in Wisconsin and all across our great country. Obviously there are a lot of reasons to be angry.
Walker’s rank hypocrisy was on display last night, with a campaign commercial during the Green Bay Packers’ football game entitled “Working Together.” The ad features an ultra-conservative member of the Waukesha County School Board with just a few months of experience as a board member.
“Gov. Walker promised to create jobs and his plans have left us with a higher unemployment rate and 14,000 more people filing for unemployment,” said Ross. “With that record, when Walker says Wisconsin’s best days are ahead, he’ll get no disagreement from most of Wisconsin.”
