Constituents Call for Kind, Kagen, Petri to Vote for Clean Energy Bill Friday
One Wisconsin Now Delivers Petitions in Favor of President's Green Economy Plan
MADISON, Wis. — Constituents from across the congressional districts of U.S. Reps. Ron Kind, Steve Kagen, and Tom Petri have signed a petition urging them to both strengthen and vote in favor of critical legislation on the House floor Friday to transform the economy into one harnessing the power of green technology.
“Wisconsin and the United States need a strong clean energy bill,” said Scot Ross, One Wisconsin Now Executive Director, which delivered petitions to the representative’s offices. “President Obama has made transforming our economy with clean energy one of his top priorities and we need Reps. Kind, Kagen, and Petri to stand with the president and the people of Wisconsin and vote for this bill.”
Congress is expected to vote Friday on the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The bill could reshape America’s energy policy and finally move the United States towards clean and renewable sources. Unfortunately, powerful special interests in the coal and oil industries have weakened the bill, demanding loopholes, bailouts and giveaways from the taxpayers.
Three critical improvements needed to strengthen the bill are:
- Ensure more clean energy for America: Require power companies to produce more clean energy. Wind and solar create more than twice as many jobs as coal and oil.
- Hold polluters accountable: Restore President Obama’s current authority through the EPA to crack down on global warming pollution from power plants.
- Create more clean energy jobs for America and build resiliency to climate change: Reduce giveaways to polluting industries in order to bolster green job development and protect vulnerable communities.
“We need Reps. Kind, Kagen and Petri to make this the best bill for America and we know they can do that,” said Ross. “We must leave dirty and dangerous energy behind for the security of our future and the recovery of our economy. The American Clean Energy Security Act is an important step in that direction.”
