Walk against war heads west

Witness Against War, a 450-mile walk from Chicago to St. Paul for the Republican convention, organized by Voices for Creative Nonviolence, continues to wend its way across Wisconsin.

The walkers leave Prairie du Sac Thursday morning, July 31, headed for Baraboo. The schedule for the next week or so follows below the fold:8/1 Fri 5 pm (dinner) 7 pm (public talk) Dinner/public meeting with the WAW walkers – Baraboo. At the Garden Party Cafe , 524 Oak Street 2nd floor. Dinner will cost $10. For reservations call Hiroshi Kanno at 608-253-7266. We hope for a good turnout.

8/3 Sun 6 pm Witness Against War; Discussion and Potluck Meal – Portage. Unity Christian Church on Prospect. This is a public event to learn about the Walkers’ first hand witness in the Middle East- both those just returning from working with Iraqi refugees in Amman, Jordan— and from Iraq Veterans. 8/5 Tues 7 – 8 pm Community Forum with WAW- “Should We Continue to Fund the War?” – Mauston. Hatch Public Library, 111 W. State St. Proponents and opponents of the war will present their positions and answer questions from the audience. Presenting the case against the war will be Jeff Leys, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence. Jeff traveled to Iraq to nonviolently oppose the impending US invasion in February, 2003 and again in November, 2003. Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth will defend the administration’s position. Scott is a veteran of the Iraq War veteran and he adopted an Iraqi orphan.
