Walker watches Obama, Doyle stimulate Milwaukee
Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker made national headlines early this year when he announced he would abstain from taking federal stimulus dollars to support the infrastructure of his home county. But whether Walker likes it or not, Gov. Doyle and the Obama administration are giving Milwaukee County and the rest of Wisconsin some sorely needed stimulation right under his nose. Now all Walker has to do is open his mouth’¦ and say ‘thank you’.
The latest story is the Obama administration’s announcement that the city of Milwaukee, along with Racine, will receive $11 million in federal stimulus dollars to pay for additional necessary law enforcement officials. For Milwaukee, that means an additional 50 police officers. Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn called the opportunity ‘a remarkable one indeed and comes at an important moment.’ A remarkable opportunity, indeed, after your own county executive trashed the whole idea in the first place.
I’m going to wait and hear what Walker has to say about the stimulus dollars he criticized going to the city of Milwaukee to pay for additional law enforcement. I wonder if he too will call it a ‘remarkable opportunity’. Maybe. But a ‘thank you’ would probably suffice.
And don’t forget, a week ago OWN stuck it to Walker’s proposal to balance a budget on the backs of his county’s most vulnerable residents at the same time Gov. Doyle announced pumping $6.3 million into programs that will actually support some of those same people Walker turned his back on.
